Species Description

Nationally rare. Habitat includes: marshy ground such as ponds that are often cattle trodden. Growing habit: Annual. Height: Up to 40 cm.

Ranunculus ophioglossifolius Vill. - Adder's-tongue Spearwort.

Erect annual to 40cm; lowest leaves ovate, cordate, glabrous, more or less entire; stem-leaves broadly to narrowly elliptic, shallowly and distantly lobed; flowers 5-9mm across; sepals not reflexed; achenes about 1.5mm, glabrous, with small tubercles on sides, with very short beak; 2n=16. Native; marshy ground; East & West Gloucestershire, formerly Dorset, South Hampshire and Jersey.

  • Flowers <2(2.5)cm across; achenes 1-2(2.3)mm
  • Lower leaves cordate at base
  • Stems erect; achenes tuberculate
