Species Description

Widespread and fairly frequent in the South, becoming scarcer further North. neutral or base-rich soils in Stony and sandy places such as paths, field margins roadside verges, wasteland, grassland, marginal land, brick yards, gravel-pits urban demolition sites, cultivated places including allotments etc. Growing habit: Biennial. Height: Up to 130 cm. Flowers: June to September. Other names include: Dyer's Rocket, Dyer's Weed Woold, Yellow Weed. Native of Europe and Western Asia. Weld is used as a dye to produce a bright yellow. It is often mixed with the blue from woad (Isatis tinctoria) to produce various shades of green.
