Species Description
Common and widespread throughout England except for the South West. Elsewhere it is scarce. Habitat includes: Prefers light soils but will use loam and heavy clay in disturbed places such as arable fields (especially amongst cereal crops), wasteland, allotments, gardens, roadside verges, spoil heaps, field gateways, field margins, tracks etc. Growing habit: Annual. Height: Up to 60 cm. Flowers: July to August. Other names include: Matricaria recutita (old name), German Chamomile, Hungarian Chamomile (Kamilla), Wild Chamomile, Blue Chamomile. ID: Very similar to scentless Mayweed which confusingly can also smell. The best way to tell is that Scented has a hollow receptacle, whereas in scentless it is solid.
