Species Description
Common in areas not far from the coast mainly in England and Wales, but is spreading inland due to salting of roads imitating coastal conditions. Habitats include: woodland, hedgerows, ditches, road side verges, wasteland, cultivated places e.g. allotments. In localities it ca be very abundant. Other names include: Horse parsley, ‘pot herb of Alexandria’, Alisanders, smyrnium. Flowers April-June. Biennial. Every bit of this plant is edible. It was introduced by the Romans and was used before the days of celery. Grows up to 1.5m.
