Species Description

Widespread as a planted tree throughout the UK, especially around London. Habitat includes: streets, parks, estates etc. Growing habit: Suckering, Deciduous Perennial. Height: Up to 26 m. Flowers: July to August. Introduced into cultivation in 1751 and first recorded from the wild in 1935.

Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle - Tree-of-heaven.

Tree to 26m; leaves ≤90cm with ≤41 narrowly ovate, acuminate, serrate leaflets; panicles 10-20cm, greenish-white; achenes pendent, 3-4cm, reddish then whitish; (2n=64, 80). Neophyte-naturalised; much planted in South East England, especially in Greater London and there frequently extensively suckering and self-sown, scattered North in Britain to Central Scotland, Channel Islands; China.
