Species Description

Widespread and fairly common throughout the UK. It has been widely wiped out by Dutch elm disease. In Bristol it is common in its prefered habitat. Habitat includes: Woodland, hedgerows, churchyards, parks. Height: Up to 40m. Other names include: Scots Elm. Wind pollinated. Flowers develop into small, winged fruits called 'samaras'. Susceptible to Dutch elm disease (a fungal disease which was introduced in the 1960s) but not as badly affected as some other Elms. Interesting fact: before metal pipes, English towns had elm water mains, including Bristol, Reading, Exeter, Southampton, Hull and Liverpool.
