Species Description
Widespread and fairly frequent throughout the UK except for parts of the East. Habitat includes: Fertile soils in places such as woodlands, hedgerows, scrub, parks, gardens, churchyards, etc. Other names include: Gean, Sweet Cherry, Mazzard, Massard, Bird Cherry (not to be confused with Britain's other native Cherry - Bird Cherry). Height: 15 to 32 m. Flowers: April to May. Growing habit: Deciduous Perennial. Lifespan: Up to 150 years. Has a diploid set of sixteen chromosomes (2n = 16).
