Species Description

Common and widespread throughout the UK. Habitats include: woodland, hedgerows, marshland, ponds, canals, river / stream sides etc. Other names include: Pussy Willow, Common Sallow. Growing habit: Dioecious (Male and Female on separate plants). It is a food plant for many caterpillars including the Sallow Kitten, Sallow Clearwing, Dusky Clearwing, Lunar Hornet clearwing, Purple Emperor Butterfly. Height: 4 - 6 m.
