Species Description

Rosa rugosa Thunb. - Japanese Rose.

Strongly suckering; stem erect, to 1.5(2)m, tomentose, with numerous tomentose prickles and acicles; leaflets bullate, green, rather shiny, tomentose to hairy and glandular on lowerside, uniserrate; flowers 1(-3), white to red, 6-9cm across; pedicels 1.5-2cm, tomentose, usually with some gland-tipped acicles; sepals 2-3cm, erect, narrow but with expanded tip; fruit globose to depressed-globose, 1.5-2.5(3)cm often more or less pendent, red; orifice of disc ≥1/2 its total width; (2n=14, 28). Neophyte-naturalised; much grown for ornament and as stock for cultivars, naturalised and invasive on dunes, rough ground and banks, often mass-planted; scattered through much of British Isles; East Asia.
