Species Description
Widely scattered over the southern half of the UK but mostly in the east. Habitat includes: woodland, fen carr, hedgerows, scrub, field margins, parks, roadsides etc. Food Plant: Birches (Betula spp.), Poplars (Populus spp.), Willows (Salix spp.) and Broad-leaved Dock (Rumex obtusifolius). Flight period: May to July. Length: male = 7.5 - 8 mm, female = 8 - 9 mm. Confusion species: Very similar to E. caeruleocarpus but in E. vicina the inner hind tibial spur is longer than the apical breadth of the hind tibia (shorter in E. caeruleocarpus). E. caeruleocarpus also seems to often have the spur a lighter colour and the black on the tibia slightly less extensive.
