Species Description

Widespread throughout the UK. Habitat includes: woodland rides, hedgerows, scrub etc. Food Plant: Elders (Sambucus) including S. nigra (Elder), S. ebulus (Dwarf Elder) and S. racemosa (Red-berried Elder). Very similar to M. albicincta but differs in the females having the hind trochanters predominantly white and the trochantellus plain (predominantly black and the latter marked with a black spot in M. albicincta). In males the labrum of M. alboannulata is white with darkened margins but extensively darkened in M. albicincta. Flight period: April to July. Length: 10 - 11 mm. Other names include: Elder Strider, Cryptic Elder Macrophya.
