Species Description

Fairly frequent throughout the UK but mainly in England. Habitat includes: Still / slow-moving water sources with a good growth of many aquatic plants and high levels of calcium dissolved in it, such as ponds (including in gardens, parks and allotments as they are often sold at garden centres to introduce to newly made ponds), lakes, drains. Measurements: Diameter = 35 mm (adult), Rings = 3 to 4.5 rounded whorls. Shell Colour: light yellowish with brown, reddish or greenish; overall looks brown or reddish. Diet: Algae in which they eat by scraping the sides of algae covered objects such as rocks with a special tongue with embedded teeth called a 'radula'. Life story: Lays eggs in a protective mass of jelly on plants or any other underwater structure.
