Species Description
Widespread but uncommon throughout the UK, mainly in the Western half. Habitat includes: wet heaths, moors, woodland clearings etc. Life story: The rat-tailed larvae develop in peaty pools and ditches. Flight period: May to November (peaks in July). Diet: Adults = Pollen and Nectar from Brambles, Thistles, Knapweeds, Wild Garlic, Devil's-bit Scabious, Larvae = Detritus. Other names include: Bog Hoverfly.
