Species Description
Widespread ad frequent throughout the UK. Habitats include: meadows, gardens, allotments, parks, cemeteries, wasteland etc. Other names include: Eristalis interruptus. Identification: Has a black stripe down the middle of its face and a small, compact wing stigma. Flight period: April to October, peaks in July and August. Diet: Pollen and Nectar from Ragworts, Thistles and Umbellifers. Rat-tailed larvae develop in organically-rich wet locations such as pools, ditches, farmyard drains etc.
