Species Description
Widespread and locally very common along Coasts throughout the UK but most common up to Middlesbrough. Further North it becomes sparse and quite scarce. In ungrazed sites this species is dominant and takes over. Habitat includes: margins of brackish creeks, saltmarshes, saltmarsh-sand dune transitions, shingle banks, sea walls etc. Growing habit: Rhizomatous Perennial. Height: Up to 1.2 m (in exposed sites it is often flattened by the wind, however in sheltered sites it can reach up to about 2 m). There are 2 varieties: Elytrigia atherica var. atherica (2 records), Elytrigia atherica var. setigera (0 records).
