Species Description
Very scattered throughout the UK. It is widely grown and may self-sow. Habitat includes: gardens, parks, allotments, churchyards, pavements, wasteland, tips etc. Growing habit: Tufted Perennial. Height: Up to 75 cm. Flowers: June to September. Native to New Zealand.

Stems to 75cm, densely tufted; leaves becoming reddish-brown and frayed at ends; panicle with long central axis bearing at each node several slender branches with well separated spikelets; glumes 2-3.5mm; lemma about 2mm plus awn 6-8mm; (2n=40-44). Neophyte-naturalised; now much grown as ornamental and readily self-sowing in cracks and rough ground; England and Scotland North to Moray, South & East Ireland, mainly South England; New Zealand.
