Species Description

It is a favourite garden plant to many and is widely grown throughout the UK. Height: Up to 1 m. Native to the South-western United States, Northern Mexico and Argentina. Other names include: Fine-stem Needlegrass, Fine-leaved Nassella, Argentine Needle-grass, Texas needle grass, 'Pony Tails', Stipa tenuissima (old name).

Nassella tenuissima (Trin) Barkworth (Stipa tenuissima Trin.) - Argentine Needle-grass.

Culms to 70cm; ligule ≤2.5mm; glumes 5-8mm including long fine 1-pointed apex; lemma 2-3mm including callus <1mm, glabrous except for densely pilose callus; awn 5-9cm; (2n=32, 40). Neophyte-naturalised; increasingly grown as ornamental and self-sowing, becoming naturalised; scattered in England and Wales, South & East Ireland; Argentina and Chile.
