Species Description

Widespread and locally frequent in England and Wales, becoming scarce elsewhere. Habitat includes: woodland rides, hedgerows, field margins, gardens, parks, allotments, churchyards etc. Flight period: August to November (peaks September to October). Length: 15 mm. Life story: the larvae develop in rotting matter such as compost, leaf debris, cow dung etc. (I have also found them in wood chip mulch).
