Species Description

Common and widespread throughout the UK. Habitat includes: farmland, allotments, woodland etc. Flight period: May to October. Diet: Male feeds on nectar, Female is a blood sucker and will bite humans, livestock etc. Lavae live in damp soil and rotten wood.
