Species Description
Widespread and fairly frequent in the southern half of the UK, becoming scarcer in the north. Habitat includes: Around mature deciduous trees in places such as gardens, parks, allotments, churchyards, woodland, hedgerows etc. Length: 4.5 mm. Life story: The larvae develop under the bark or dead wood of deciduous trees such as poplars, limes, willows and birches. Flight period: May to October. Apparently impossible to distinguish females from P. anderssoni and males require dissection; although it was originally noted for lacking the wing smudging but this has since proven to be an unreliable distinction.
