Species Description
Common and widespread throughout England and Wales. Habitat includes: farmland (with cattle especially), woodland etc. Life story: Basks on posts and fences, breeds in cattle dung (other dung may be used). Diet: Tears, sweat and blood (bites from other flies) from animals especially cattle), nectar from a variety of flowers. Flight period: March to October (peaks April to May). Length: 7 - 8 mm.
