Species Description

Common and widespread throughout the UK but mainly in the South. Habitat includes: Places with Birch and Alder trees such as gardens, parks, allotments, churchyards, woodland etc. Length: 7 - 9 mm. Life story: Adults overwinter, emerging and mating in the spring. The male dies soon after but the female survives, brooding the eggs and young larvae, which feed on Birch and Alder (I have once observed an adult on Hornbeam). New adults are found from August onwards. Seen: All year round.
