Widespread and fairly frequent throughout the UK. Habitat includes: Anywhere with oaks such as woodland, parks etc. Life story: There are two generations per year, the spring generation are sexual, consisting of both males and females. After mating the females lay into the newly emerging buds, causing galls to form over the summer which hosts an all-female (agamous) generation - which emerges in the autumn. The agamous generation burrows down into the soil to lay on the surface roots of the oak and causing subterrestrial galls for the cycle to repeat.
