Species Description
Widespread but not common throughout the Western side of the UK especially around S. Wales and Bristol. Non-native Established from Australia and arrived as stowaways amongst imports of exotic plants. Habitat includes: Damp/wet places with lots of decomposing vegetation. Often found under rocks and logs (during the day and ventures out at night) in places such as gardens, woodland. Life story: Only crustacean in the UK to live entirely on land but they must stay damp as they easily dry out and die. Diet: They are detritivores feeding on decaying plant matter. Life story: Other names include: Lawn Shrimp, Wood-hopper, Australian Mud Shrimp.
