Hieracium spilophaeum Jord. ex Boreau (H. maculatum Sm. (NBN) / Schrank (Kew, GBIF, EDIT) ssp. maculatum ? (Kew, GBIF, EDIT) (Spotted Hawkweed). - sect. Vulgata General / - H. spilophaeum was formerly named as H. maculatum Sm. but this has become an agg. / bin for general plants with spotted leaves so H. spilophaeum is the new name given for the majority of plants ours are associated with (H. scotostictum probably make up the rest); however Kew, GBIF and EDIT treat most members of sect. Vulgata and Hieracium with blotched leaves as subspecies under H. maculatum Schrank when we treat them as distinct species in their own right. The following have been recorded in Britain: ssp. asperatum, ssp. commixtum, ssp. fictum, ssp. inquinatum, ssp. naevuliferum, ssp. pollichiae (we have 1 record). Ours would be expected to be ssp. maculatum (as it is listed as synonymous with) but its distribution is absent in Britain.

McCosh; at Portishead Station-yard in 1984 by R. FitzGerald and determined by P.D. Sell.
-
Hieracium argillaceum Jord. (H. lachenalii Suter ssp. argillaceum (Jord.) Zahn) (Southern Hawkweed) / - sect. vulgata Widespread and easily the most frequent hawkweed in our region, though still not in any way common. Nationally regarded as being native only to Wales, however I believe its abundance in the Avon Gorge and our close proximity to Wales suggests that it's native range could easily encompass our area as well.

Hieracium amplexicaule L. (ssp. amplexicaule) (Sticky Hawkweed) - sect. Amplexicaulia - 1 record from 1933 according to NBN [not to be confused with the record mentioned on a wall in Clifton, Brist. (NBN) / Fr. (old name) - refers to the continental plant. Not ours. There is a lot of confusion here. H. vulgatum refers to plants from Europe. - Hieracium spilophaeum Jord. ex Boreau (Atlas of British and Irish Hawkweeds) H. maculatum Sm.
