Ilex aquifolium L. (Holly) / Woodland Common Common and often dominant in woodland, scrub and hedgerows, though decidedly scarce on the North Somerset Levels and Moors and in the River Avon Valley. "A tree with entire leaves throughout grows on Yate Rocks, G. It is the var. laurifolia." (White, 1912). It is no longer recognised today. Holly starts off prickly but loses them once they reach a height beyond the mouths of grazing animals. It is also a dioecious species, producing male and female flowers on separate plants, requiring the presence of both in order to produce fruit. The male plant usually flowers in around April and May but was recorded in bloom during a New Year Plant Hunt in Fairyland, Avon Gorge in 2026 by D. Peters.
