49.) HYDRANGEACEAE to LOASACEAE

HYDRANGEACEAE - Mock-orange family

PHILADELPHICUS L.

  • Philadelphus coronarius L. (Mock-orange) / General Scarce Found as an introduction or garden throwout on brownfield sites, hedges, old ruins and in woodland; thinly scattered over the region. Some records may be mistakes for P. 'Lemoinei Group' which differs in having leaves hairy (not glabrous to sparsely hairy) on the lowerside, flowers cup-shaped (not saucer-shaped) and often hairy flower parts (true P. x lemoinei has a strictly glabrous calyx and hypanthium).

  • Philadelphus 'Virginalis Group' (P. coronarius x P. microphyllus x P. pubescens = P. x virginalis) (Double Mock-orange) General Extinct Now the most commonly grown Mock-orange in gardens. Only recorded at Keynsham in 1999 by ? (as P. x virginalis) but is possibly overlooked. Differs from P. coronarius in having flore pleno flowers and leaves more densely hairy on the underside.

[A bit confusing - combination and common name given in FOTBR are for P. x lemoinei and it doesn't give any specific records. Maybe include a map of just Philadelphus.]

HYDRANGEA L.

  • Hydrangea macrophylla (Thunb.) Ser. (Hydrangea) General Very Rare Commonly grown in gardens and occasionally found in wild situations as a planted relic of garden throwout.

  • Hydrangea petiolaris Siebold & Zucc. (Climbing Hydrangea) General Very Rare Found at Bath in 2013 by ? and again the following year by ?.

  • Hydrangea sargentiana Rehder (Sargent's Hydrangea) General Very Rare Found in an abandoned garden on the bank of the Hazel Brook, Blaise Castle Estate in 2024 by D. Peters.

CORNACEAE - Dogwood family

CORNUS L.

  • Cornus sanguinea L. (Dogwood) / Woodland Common A common constituent of woodland, scrub and hedgerows; mostly on calcareous soils and becoming distinctly scarce in the coastal lowlands.

  • ssp. sanguinea Woodland Common The native subspecies with the same range and distribution as the species. With at least some hairs on the leaf undersides sticking up.

  • ssp. australis (C.A. Mey.) Jáv. (Southern Dogwood) General Scarce A native of eastern Europe and the Caucasus; now much planted and escaping into the wild where it threatens to hybridise with the native plant. It differs from ssp. sanguinea in having hairs all lying flat against the surface. It also has thinner more floppy leaves.

  • Cornus koenigii C.K. Schneid. (Koenig's Dogwood) General Very Rare Widely planted in car parks as for C. sanguinea ssp. australis but very rarely escaping. Found on a road verge on Newfoundland Way, Bristol in 2024 by D. Peters. It is probably overlooked. It is similar to C. sanguinea ssp. sanguinea but has much larger leaves (up to 18 cm).

  • Cornus sericea L. (Red-osier Dogwood) General Scarce Widely planted for ornament for its winter-red stems and escapes and becomes naturalised on brownfield sites and in urban woods. It is similar to C. alba but has leaves narrower and more tapering-acuminate (more abruptly so in C. alba), berries white to cream (whitish to pale blue in C. alba) and the stone is flattened-subglobose rather than flattened-ellipsoid.

  • Cornus alba L. (White Dogwood) / General Very Rare Planted and escaping as for C. sericea but much rarer. It is probably overlooked.

  • Cornus controversa Hemsl. (Table Dogwood, Wedding Cake Tree - GBIF) 'Variegata' General Very Rare Recorded in the grounds of Bristol Zoo, Clifton in 2015 by R. Bland.

  • Cornus capitata Wall. ssp. capitata (Bentham's Dogwood) General Very Rare Recorded at Freshford near Bath in 2006 by P. Cobb.

[Get rid.]

  • Cornus kousa Bürger ex Hance ssp. chinensis (Osborn) Q.Y. Xiang (Japanese Dogwood) General Very Rare Record at Snuff Mills in 2024 by S. Waycott (redetermined by D. Peters as this as originally thought to be C. capitata). This species is very similar to C. capitata but differs in being deciduous rather than evergreen.

  • Cornus mas L. (Cornelian-cherry) / General Scarce Planted for ornament in public green spaces; mostly around Bristol.

LOASACEAE - Stickleaf family

Gray (White Blazingstar - GBIF, White-stem Blazing Star, White-stemmed Stickleaf, Small-flowered Blazing Star - Wikipedia) - [Sandwith, 1932] General Extinct A native of western North America; recorded at Ashton Gate in 1917 by C.I. Sandwith - a first and only record for the British Isles.
