MYRTACEAE - Myrtle family

EUCALYPTUS L'Hér.

  • Eucalyptus gunnii Hook. f. (ssp. gunnii) (Cider Gum) General Very Rare Widely planted for ornament around Bristol. Also recorded at Weston-super-Mare in 2020s by ? [BSBI]. Mature trees look drastically different to young shrubs (with decorative silver-blue rounded leaves) and are often used in flower bouquets.

[Also 2 records outside Bristol just as Eucalyptus - probably this.]

  • Eucalyptus globulus Labill. (Southern Blue-gum) Recorded at Hotwells in 2000 by ?.

[Says recorded in a garden - get rid.]

LEPTOSPERMUM J.R. & G. Forst.

  • Leptospermum scoparium J.R. & G. Forst. (Broom Tea-tree) General Very Rare Recorded at Freshford, Bath in 2002 by ?.

[Recorded only as Scoparium but this is the most likely.]

LUMA A. Gray

  • Luma apiculata (DC.) Burret (Chilean Myrtle) General Very Rare Sparsely recorded over Bristol.

[All records from gardens - get rid.]

STAPHYLEA L.

  • Staphylea pinnata L. (Bladdernut) General Extinct. Recorded at Hinton Blewett in 1999 by R. Walker and at Weston-super-Mare in 1999 by I.P. Green.

ANACARDIACEAE - Sumach family

Rhus L.

  • Rhus typhina L. (Stag's-horn Sumach) General Uncommon Commonly planted for ornament and cover and often escapes via spreading underground suckers - from which it can form huge stands. The cut-leaved cultivar 'Dissecta' was found escaping from a garden on Farington Road, Horfield, Bristol in 2023 by D. Peters.

COTINUS Mill.

  • Cotinus coggygria Scop. (Smoke-tree) Widely planted for ornament across Bristol. Recorded escaped at ST57 in 1990s by ? [BSBI record]; and at Bower Ashton Mineral Railway in 1998 by M. Evans and M. Wood.
