Born in 1959 originally from Newcastle he worked for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), the Nature Conservancy Council and as a local government countryside officer, before moving to Bristol where he worked for the Avon Wildlife Trust as their Conservation Officer from 1993 to 2000.
