Ivor W. Evans
Born in 1891 and died on the 9th November 1969. I.W. Evans was part of a circle of botanists which included the likes of J.W. White, I.M. Roper and the Sandwiths. He had been a member of Bristol Naturalists' Society from 1919 until his death and played a large active role in the society as being president of the Botanical Section from 1956-64.
The Flora of the Bristol Region (2000):
(1891-1969), a commercial artist, was an enthusiastic amateur field botanist from an early age, contributing several records to White's The Bristol Flora (1912). He was President of the Botanical Section of the BNS for many years and led more than 100 field meetings. He regularly contributed numerous records to Bristol Botany up to 1966 of both native and alien plants. In 1910 he discovered Spiked Speedwell (Veronica spicta ssp. hybrida) on the Somerset side of the Avon Gorge, although White's The Bristol Flora (1912) notes this plant as absent from Somerset. In the Bristol area he found the grass Aegilops ligustica in 1938 new to Britain, and other notable aliens including Yellow Nut-sedge (Cyperus esculentus), Rough Dog's-tail (Cynosurus echinatus) and Rubus laciniatus, as well as many native species, among them Climbing Corydalis (Ceratocapnos claviculata) near Iron Acton, Knapweed Broomrape (Orobanche elatior) near Hawkesbury, and Slender Tufted-sedge (Carex acuta) at Berrow (Somerset). His herbarium, with good alien representation, is in BRISTM.
Flora of Gloucestershire (1948):
I. Evans, of Bristol, who in the past collaborated with Mr. White and Miss Roper, and is an active member of the Bristol Naturalists' Society, contributes many district 5 records.
