George Claridge Druce
George Claridge Druce, born 23rd May 1850, died 29th February 1932 (aged 81), left a monumental achievement as one of Britain's most accomplished botanist's. Though he resided elsewhere such as in Oxford (to which he became mayor), he made a great number of records in the Bristol district, often in company with the likes of J.W. White and the Sandwith's with whom he frequently corresponded. He had a great interest in the alien flora. In C.I. Sandwith's own words (in The Adventive Flora of the Port of Bristol) "For many years he was of the greatest assistance to me in the identification of specimens, and was the channel by which they passed to the great continental alienologist, the late Dr A. Thellung, and to the late Dr J. Murr". His name is honoured in the Geranium hybrid G. x oxonianum (Druce's Crane's-bill').
