Species Description

Guizotia abyssinica (L. f.) Cass. - Niger.

Sparsely hairy; stems erect, to 1(2)m; leaves lanceolate to narrowly ovate, clasping stem at base; capitula 2-4cm across including ligules 1-2cm; (2n=30). Neophyte-casual; grown in warm countries as oilseed, casual on tips and waste ground near oil-mills and as bird-seed alien; scattered in Britain North to Moray; Isle of Man, Channel Islands, South & Central Ireland; East Africa. Often not flowering before killed by frosts.

JSTOR (G. schimperi)

An erect annual, 2–3 ft. high, pubescent above. Leaves elliptic-ovate, subacute, denticulate, cordate-amplexicaul, sessile, 1/2–4 by 1/8–1 1/2 in. Capitula hemispherical, 1/2 in. diameter, in a divaricate cyme; pedicels ranging up to 1 1/4 in. Outer involucral bracts ovate or ovate-lanceolate, not exceeding the florets. Paleæ of the receptacle loosely pilose towards the tip. Corolla-tube of the disk-florets subglabrous or somewhat hairy at base. Achenes glabrous, 1/12– 1/10 in. long.

An erect villous annual, 9–15 in. high, with spreading branches. Stem and branches with spreading hairs. Leaves from elliptical to lanceolate, narrowed at both ends, more or less serrate, sessile, subamplexicaul, 1/2–3 by 1/8–1 1/2 in. Capitula hemispherical, 1/4– 3/8 in. diameter, pedicellate, in an open corymbose or somewhat elongated leafy cyme; pedicels slender, ranging up to 2 in. Outer involucral bracts lanceolate, obtuse, exceeding the inner ones. Corolla-tube of disk-florets hairy below. Achenes glabrous, 1/15 in. long.
