Species Description

Scattered and very rare casual. Habitat includes: tips, wasteland, spoil heaps etc.

Physalis philadelphica Lam. - Large-flowered Tomatillo.

Differs from P. ixocarpa usually with larger flowers, fruits and fruiting calyx, but dimensions overlap, obscured by cultivars; (2n=24). Neophyte-casual; increasingly common on tips etc. from its use as fruit; scattered in England; North and South America.

Key:

  • Stems and leaves sparsely hairy to subglabrous
  • Corolla (15)20-40mm across; filaments ≤5mm; anthers 2-4(5)mm, becoming curved after dehiscence; style ≤8mm
