Species Description

Stace 4:

Sisyrinchium bermudiana L. (S. graminoides E.P. Bicknell, S. hibernicum Á. & D. Löve) - Blue-eyed-grass.

Stems to 50cm, usually branched; leaves ≤5mm wide; tepals pale blue, 6-10mm; 2n=64, 88, 96. Probably native; wet meadows and stony ground by lakes; very local in West Ireland from West Cork to West Donegal, known only since 1845. There is argument as to weather are plant is a native endemic or an American introduction, and in latter case as to its correct name. Records of naturalised plants from Britain need checking.

Key:

  • Tepals blue
  • At least some stems branched, each branch with one terminal infloresence; perianth 15-20mm across, pale blue; pedicels arched to pendent in fruit
