Species Description

Very rare and scattered throughout the UK. Habitat includes: gardens, parks, allotments, churchyards, scrub, arable fields, hedge-banks, roadside verges, wasteland, old walls, coastal cliffs, shingle etc. Growing habit: Annual. Height: Up to 1 m. Flowers: May to September (but can be as early as January).

Stace 4:

Ssp. capreolata.

Bracts usually shorter than fruiting pedicels; fruit about 2 x 2mm, with rounded to very obtuse apex; 2n=56. Channel Islands; the continental subspecies, rarely recorded in Britain (mostly England), but probably only as casual and often misidentified.
