Species Description

Widespread and fairly frequent in the South, scarce further North. Habitat includes: woodland, hedge banks, gardens, parks, allotments, churchyards etc. Flight period: February to December (January on mild days). Life story: Adult overwinters. Diet: Adult = Nectar / pollen from Asteraceae flowers such as Nipplewort, Sallow, Prunus species, Lesser Celandine, Umbellifers, Bramble (summer), Ivy (autumn). Larva = Aphids from Barberry, Broom, Umbellifers.
